Fading Stories
Raoul Wallenberg Academy
2019

As Europe once again faces a resurgence of right-wing extremism and hate, it’s more important than ever to look back and ensure history doesn’t repeat itself. Yet, the voices of Holocaust survivors are fading, and younger generations are becoming increasingly disconnected from this history.

“Fading Stories – Pass Them On” was an exhibition held at Fotografiska in Stockholm, highlighting the experiences of 23 Holocaust survivors. The project was led by the Raoul Wallenberg Academy and photographer Sanna Sjöswärd.

Instead of traditional photographs, the exhibition featured typographic posters and an AR app, allowing visitors to unlock and engage with the survivors’ stories via their phones. Once unlocked, these stories continued to live on, sharing the survivors’ truths. The posters had an aesthetic inspired by censored information, with altered quotes from the survivors, urging the viewer to actively seek out the full story.

The exhibition’s black-and-white design ensured complete focus on the narratives, with no room for ambiguity. In a time when distinguishing truth from falsehood is increasingly challenging, this design decision was vital. The typography, drawing inspiration from the Hebrew alphabet, symbolised a bridge between history and the present.

Intreview from Swedish Design Awards, 2020

Statement by the Jury:
The project is executed with a bold, typographically minimalistic approach that, despite its apparent simplicity, successfully conveys the theme with both aesthetics and relevance. The interactive element creates a clever dramaturgy that effectively forces the reader into deeper reflection on the content of the text.
